Rhys discovered the wonders of cycling whilst on a gap year in 2013, fresh out of school and without a clue what to do with his life.
After seeing thousands of people in Copenhagen darting around on bikes, he resolved to get in on the act when he returned home. After hours of browsing online classified ads, he picked up a 1980s racer for the princely sum of £30.
After a couple of years of suffering, he ditched the downtube shifters and bought a Specialized Allez Sport road bike. Shedding a few kilos off the bike was also a godsend, and Rhys soon started riding more seriously in the hills around Keele University. A couple of brutal rides in the Peak District, however, quashed any faint hopes of a career in pro cycling.
Since finishing his studies he has worked as a freelance writer in Nottingham, riding whenever possible and volunteering at a charity bike shop once a week. He rides with a club most Saturdays and plans on picking up racing in the new year.
